WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The No. 25 TCU women's tennis team knocked off No. 22 William & Mary on Sunday by a score of 6-1 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The win improves the Horned Frogs to 1-1 this season, while dropping William & Mary to 0-1 overall
"We did a nice job of bouncing back today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "I thought we came out with good focus and played with intensity. I'm very happy with the win against a very good team on the road. I feel like we have some momentum going into next weekend."
In doubles play, the 16th-ranked TCU duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska began with a crucial 8-4 win over the No. 37 William & Mary team of Ragini Acharya and Katarina Zoricic at the No. 1 position. Newcomer Gaby Mastromarino and junior Nina Munch-Soegaard would follow in the No. 2 position with an 8-5 victory over Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and Barbara Zidek to clinch the doubles point. The tandem of freshman Kayla Duncan and sophomore Katariina Tuohimaa also tacked on a doubles win to complete the sweep, winning 8-6, over Carmen Pop and Katie Kargl.
Mastromarino and Duncan would lead off singles play with a pair of early wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions. Duncan, a Winston-Salem, N.C., native, topped Maria Morrissey in her singles debut of the spring, 6-1, 6-1, while Mastromarino took down Zidek by a score of 7-5, 6-0.
Munch-Soegaard clinched the match for the Frogs, picking up her second win of the season from the No. 1 position. The Amarillo, Texas product, currently ranked No. 12 in the country, defeated No. 95 Zoricic in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. Harkins, ranked 49th in singles, also earned her second straight win over a ranked opponent, toppling Acharya, 7-6, 6-3.
Tuohimaa would also snag a win in a tough battle against W&M's Pop, taking the match and ending the afternoon, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
The Frogs will now prepare to take on Georgia Tech in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
