CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - TCU women's tennis ended its stretch at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Saturday, falling in singles and doubles action.
"I'm really proud of our effort here," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "As upset as the players were about not winning the tournament, we actually had a strong showing."
The No. 9 team of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska was downed by Notre Dame's pairing of Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling, 6-3, 6-4. The TCU duo won two matches in the tournament, defeating No. 12 Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic from Texas and Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion.
"Doubles ran into a team that kept their unforced errors down," Hammond said. "Macall and Anna fought hard and kept it close, but Notre Dame deserves the credit for an outstanding match."
Junior Nina Munch-Soegaard also ended her tremendous run through the first three rounds of the singles bracket, falling to the nation's top ranked Aurelija Miseviciute from Arkansas, 6-4, 6-1. By reaching the singles semifinals, Munch-Soegaard earned the best singles finish at the ITA Indoor Championships in TCU history. The Amarillo, Texas native earned her three wins over No. 3 Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, No. 30 Samantha Murray of Northwestern and No 70 Maria Sanchez from Southern California.
"In singles, Nina's opponent also did a nice job of keeping her unforced errors down and with Nina's attacking style, it was a question of whether she would be on and she just had a tough day."
The TCU women's tennis team has now completed the fall season and will return to action on Jan. 24, 2008 at Virginia.
