Hackett and Stubbs key TCU victory

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Brent Hackett scored seven points in the final 1:48, including a pair of free-throws to break a tie with 5.5 seconds to play, as TCU defeated Jackson State 76-74 tonight at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.A sophomore from Fort Worth (Southwest High School), Hackett scored 16 points for his second straight career-best scoring effort. He had nine points in Saturday's season opener against Tarleton State.
After a timeout following Hackett's free-throws, Jackson State was unable to get off a shot before the final buzzer.
TCU senior Judson Stubbs posted his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Nile Murry scored 14 points.
Stubbs' 10 boards were two shy of a career-high 12 set last year at Southern Miss.
TCU (1-1) trailed 70-67 with 1:48 remaining before a Hackett 3-pointer, his third of the night, tied the game.
A pair of Stubbs free-throws gave the Frogs a 72-70 lead before a layup by Charlie White evened the contest with 46 seconds left.
Following a Hackett jumper to put TCU back on top 74-72 with 16 seconds remaining, another White layup with nine seconds to play forced the 11th tie in the game.
The Frogs led 39-33 at the intermission before the Tigers opened the second half with a 14-4 spurt, making six of their first 10 shots, to lead 47-43 after a Rodrick Smith free-throw with 14:11 left.
The Frogs countered with a 10-3 run to take a 53-50 advantage on a Murry layup after a Femi Ibikunle block on the defensive end.
After Jackson State went back on top 56-55, an Aliou Kane layup gave the Frogs a 57-56 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Murry extended TCU's margin to 63-58 with 6:26 to play.
An acrobatic offensive rebound and putback by Art Pierce provided TCU a 67-61 lead with 5:03 remaining.
The Tigers (0-2) scored the next nine points to lead 70-67.
TCU's Blake Adams hit a pair of first-half 3-pointers to key a 9-3 spurt that gave the Frogs a 27-22 lead with 5:10 to play before the intermission. Adams finished with seven points.
Stubbs, who had seven first-half rebounds, scored six straight points for TCU in one stretch.
TCU shot 32.4 percent for the game compared to 53.7 for Jackson State. The Frogs held a 50-33 rebounding edge while forcing 23 turnovers.
TCU returns to action Friday when it faces Oklahoma State at 9:30 p.m. Central in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. The Horned Frogs will play either Boston College or Drake on Saturday. It begins a stretch of five consecutive games away from home for TCU, whose next Daniel-Meyer Coliseum date is Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. versus Texas-Arlington.
