Magic guard joins men’s basketball staff
FORT WORTH – TCU head men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon announced on Monday, the staff addition of Orlando Magic guard and TCU graduate Desmond Bane as Chief Basketball Officer.
With the position, Bane will volunteer his time as special advisor to Dixon and the Horned Frogs program, bringing high-level insight and professional basketball experience to player development, leadership and life as an elite athlete. He will be a mentor to student-athletes, offer guidance on career management and serve as a liaison to the NBA.
"We are thrilled to welcome Desmond Bane as our Chief Basketball Officer," said Dixon. "As a TCU graduate and six-year NBA professional, Desmond brings a unique combination of experience, perspective and passion for the Horned Frog basketball program, making him an outstanding fit for this role.

Bane, who was drafted 30th overall in the 2020 draft, is coming off his sixth season in the NBA and his first with the Orlando Magic. Last season, he averaged 20.1 points and shot 39.1 percent from three while starting all 82 games. Bane's first five years as a professional were spent with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Unrated out of Seton Catholic High School in Richmond, Ind., Bane come to prominence during his four years at TCU. He was a two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection from 2016-20 and still ranks as the Horned Frogs' all-time leader in 3-pointers (249), wins (84) and games played (141). Bane also ranks third all-time in points with 1,784, third with 659 made field goals and fifth in 3-point accuracy at 43.3 percent. His No. 1 jersey was retired at TCU on Feb. 18, 2025.
Bane, who graduated from TCU in 2020 with a youth advocacy degree from the College of Education, helped transform the success of TCU men's basketball. He helped TCU win the 2017 NIT as a freshman, the program's first postseason championship. As a sophomore he helped TCU make its first NCAA Tournament in 20 years while leading the Big 12 in 3-point accuracy at 46.1 percent.
As a junior, Bane was All-Big 12 Second Team by the league's coaches and Associated Press and was USBWA All-District VII as he averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists. His 1,315 minutes played was the most in program history.
As a senior in 2019-20, Bane averaged 16.6 points, which ranked second in the Big 12. He also finished with 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists on the way to becoming the first TCU player to earn All-Big 12 First Team as he was recognized by both the coaches and AP. He also earned USBWA All-District VII and NABC All-District 8 honors.
Bane, who played in a Big 12 leading 36.02 minutes per game as a senior, never missed a game in his career and missed just one practice in his four years.
