Horned Frogs improve to 12-1 at home
FORT WORTH – No. 18 TCU volleyball broke out the brooms in front of its home crowd, sweeping UCF on Thursday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (17-5, 9-3 Big 12) secured their 12th victory of the year at home, including their seventh sweep in Funky Town. Guided by setter Lily Nicholson, who registered her 1,500th career assist, TCU's offense hit .357 as a team, marking its ninth match this season above .300. Melanie Parra and Jalyn Gibson lead the way with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
Defensively, Sarah Sylvester added her name to the record book, moving into 10th all-time at TCU with 286 career blocks. The junior tallied two rejections on the night, passing Erin Estep (285, 2002-05).
Gibson picked up exactly where she left off from her career-high 26 kills performance last Friday, slamming down the first point of the match. She got the offense going, converting on each of her first four swings to force UCF to call an early timeout down 12-8. Out of the break, Parra and Hendrix sparked a 6-1 run to put the Frogs up eight. With things in control, TCU cruised to a 25-21 set one win.
The Knights battled back in the second, giving the Frogs a run for their money in extra points. Both teams scored in bursts early on and began a back-and-forth battle tied at 10-10. In total, the second set featured 11 ties as TCU and UCF were knotted up through 18-18. A 3-0 run by the Knights put the Frogs in a hole at 21-19 and forced head coach Jason Williams to call a timeout. After tying the set back up, UCF once again took a 23-21 lead.
With their backs against the wall, senior Melanie Parra took control and helped TCU rally from behind. Freshman Hendrix capped off the set with an exclamation point, putting up a wall at the net to propel the Frogs to a 26-24 second-set victory.
TCU quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead thanks to a handful of UCF errors, but the Knights erased the deficit with a 4-0 run. Refusing to go away, they hung around until Parra sparked a 6-1 run to make it 18-14. From there, the Frogs looked to close out the set, hitting .406 in the third. Alexis Roberson finished off the Knights with the final kill to hand TCU the 3-0 win.
The Frogs will take advantage of having the remainder of the week off from competition before gearing up for a challenging road swing in the Sunflower State against No. 8 Kansas and Kansas State on Nov. 13 and 15.
