Horned Frogs back in action at Kansas State on Friday
LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 18 TCU volleyball fell to No. 12 Kansas 3-1 in a top 20 showdown on Wednesday night inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
The Horned Frogs (17-6, 9-4 Big 12) struggled offensively, hitting a season-low .134 offensively despite 19 kills from Jalyn Gibson and 16 from Melanie Parra. Parra added four blocks and a pair of aces to give her 20 points on the night, eclipsing 500 on the season for the second consecutive year.
Freshman Evan Hendrix also finished in double-digits with 10 kills and added a career-high 19 digs on the defensive side. TCU held the Jayhawks (21-3, 12-2 Big 12) below .200 offensively as well. Five Frogs racked up 12 or more digs, and Sarah Sylvester tallied seven total blocks to move into ninth all-time in the record books with 293 in her career.
In an opening set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes, both teams battled back and forth for the early lead. Gibson and Parra started hot for the Frogs, combining for eight of the team's first 10 kills to give TCU a one-point advantage at the media break. Looking for separation, it was Kansas, who took advantage of an unsuccessful TCU challenge to score four unanswered and take a 21-17 lead. The Frogs were unable to erase the deficit, falling 20-25 in the first set.
Kansas carried the momentum into the second, quickly going up 9-4 before the Frogs were forced to call a timeout. The Frogs slowly chipped away at what grew to a nine-point deficit. A 7-1 run fueled by kills from Gibson, Kelley, Parra and Roberson cut the lead to three at 17-14, but they couldn't quite close the gap, dropping the second set 21-25.
Fighting with its back against the wall, TCU flipped a switch. A 7-0 run to start the third set featured three blocks and was followed by back-to-back aces from Parra to put the Frogs up 10-2. Kansas burned an early timeout in an attempt to slow down the TCU attack but couldn't find any answers. The Frogs kept their foot on the gas and capitalized on 10 Jayhawk errors to extend the match to a fourth set with a dominant 25-15 victory.
Looking to force a fifth set, TCU started the fourth down 6-8 before running out of steam. An 8-0 Kansas run dug a deep hole for the Frogs and proved to be the difference as the Jayhawks finished off the match with a 25-17 set win.
No. 18 TCU is back in action on Friday, Nov. 15, at Kansas State. Frist serve is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
