The doubles team rallied from a 4-6 loss to clinch the match in tie-breaking fashion.
FORT WORTH – Tomi Main and Yu-Chin Tsai of the TCU women's tennis team continue to dominate at the ITA Texas Regionals at TCU's home courts this week. The number two seeded doubles team defeated Texas Tech on Monday to advance to the ITA Regional Doubles Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 10 am.
However, the match was one of the closest matches for the duo this season. Main and Tsai found themselves down 4-6 in the first set against the sixth-seeded Andreea Lila and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko. They fought back, winning the second set in tie-breaking fashion 7-6. The final set was back-and-forth but a volley from Main clinched the victory at 11-9.
"Ultimately, we picked each other up in those tough moments," said Main. "It came down to us reminding ourselves that we're in this together and the only way we could win was if we believed in each other."
After falling in the first set, the duo took it slow and set small goals for themselves throughout the remainder of the match.
"We took it point-by-point, followed the plan, and pumped each other up," said Tsai.
This week's tournament marks just the third tournament that the pair have played in together so far. Main, a transfer from Texas Tech and recently the University of the Pacific, has fit right into this TCU team.
"After playing with Yuki (Tsai) at Battle in the Bay and ITA All-Americans, I feel like we've grown a lot of confidence together," says Main. "I think that is our biggest positive right now."
Main and Tsai will play the eighth-seeded Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova in tomorrow's championship match with a trip to the NCAA Doubles Championship on the line. A win tomorrow will qualify a team for NCAAs, taking place at the end of November.
Admission to the ITA Texas Regional Championships is free and parking is available in the main lot of the Bayard H. Freidman Tennis Center.
