The Horned Frogs fought hard but fell to No. 7 Texas on Friday, 4-3.
AUSTIN, Texas – A tough battle went down in Austin on Friday night, but the No. 48 TCU women's tennis team came up just short as No. 7 Texas took the 4-3 victory at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin.
The Horned Frogs (12-7, 4-3 Big 12) prevailed in the doubles portion of the competition against the Longhorns (12-3, 5-0 Big 12) after taking the wins on courts two and three to get the early 1-0 lead. Mercedes Aristegui and Kate Paulus kicked things off with a 6-3 win on court three before Chloe Hule and Stevie Kennedy used a late break to get the 7-5 victory on court two to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, Texas fought back and took the first set on four of the courts to try and move the momentum to its side. The Longhorns got on the board with wins on courts two and three before No. 74 Ellie Douglas took down No. 17 Biana Turati, 6-4, 6-3, on the top court to even up the battle at 2-2. Texas took the lead with a straight-set win on court six, but Hule responded with a comeback on court five for the 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win to tie the match at 3-3. Aristegui fought until the very end, but No. 120 Bojana Markovic was able to close out the final court, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, to get the overall match victory for Texas.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"I am proud of the team for some things we accomplished tonight. First, we lost at No. 1 doubles, but still won the doubles point. That's something that hasn't happened all year and it's nice we have three solid doubles teams going down the stretch. Second, Ellie (Douglas) took down a former No. 1 player in college on her home court. Ellie has been close this year against the top ones, but couldn't get over the hump. Today, she did and she did it with intention and authority. Mercedes' fight at the end was incredible. She never gave up and we are going to use this match as motivation for next Friday. We fully believe now and Friday is time to execute and put it all together and take down a top-10 opponent on our home courts. We need as many people there as possible."
