CLEVELAND, Ohio – TCU swimming and diving concluded competition at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship on Saturday, with both the men's and women's teams making significant improvements in the team standings. Entering the final day, the men ranked fifth and the women sixteenth, and they finished third and tenth respectively.
SCHOOL RECORDS
TCU's top three team finish was aided by a pair of strong performances resulting in school records. Senior Dayne Odendaal put a stamp on his TCU career breaking the school 200 fly record in Saturday's prelims with a time of 1:45.15. In the "A" finals, he finished seventh overall. Odendaal broke into the TCU top five last season, but now his new record is the first sub-1:46 cut in program history.
After breaking the school 200 free record on Friday night, Noah Cumby followed that up with another school record on Saturday, breaking the 100 free record. In the "B" final, Cumby dropped his time to 43.94. His new record broke a 10-year old record and is the first sub-44 second 100 free mark in TCU history.
"A" FINALS
In the men's 1650 free, Kevin Chao recorded a top-ten finish with a ninth-place time of 15:47.68.
Kade Knoch reached the "A" finals in two events on Championship Saturday. In the 200 back, he finished sixth overall with a time of 1:45.43, and in the 200 fly, he recorded a tenth-place time of 1:47.65.
TCU had a representative in both the men's and women's 200 breast, with Hugh McPherson finishing eighth with a time of 1:59.52 and Lauren Halliburton finishing tenth in 2:19.28.
In the men's 400 free relay, Cumby, Jackson Boersma, Reed Dittlinger, and Brendan Barry finished seventh overall with a time of 2:58.65. Sally Clough, Micaela Roemer, Amanda Key, and Claire Banic finished eleventh in the women's 400 free relay, producing a season-best time of 3.25.29.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
Saturday marked the end of the 2018-2019 campaign for the TCU swimming and diving team. In the first year under James Winchester and his staff, the women's team recorded its highest conference finish in five years and the program set seven school records.
