AUSTIN, Texas - The 2017-18 season for the TCU women's tennis team came to an end on Friday afternoon as the Horned Frogs dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 6 Texas in the Big 12 Championship Quarterfinal at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
Doubles was a tight battle as the Frogs (13-14) went toe-to-toe with the Longhorns (20-4) to get the early lead. Texas ultimately used early breaks on multiple courts to gain the upper hand as they took the 6-4 and 6-3 wins on courts one and three, respectively, to capture the doubles point.
Singles action continued to be a fight for points with Stevie Kennedy able to take her opener on the bottom court for TCU. The Longhorns had too much of a lead on the other courts and were able to grab straight-set victories on three courts to complete the overall team win.
Quote from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Well, it wasn't the result or the season we all wanted. There were a few bright spots today, but ultimately Texas was too good for us and they played really tough on several courts. I thought Aleksa (Cveticanin), Aleksandra (Zenovka) and Stevie (Kennedy) really were engaged and battling in their matches at a solid level. Overall, my point to the team was that it's been a challenging season in many different areas. We have had a lot of rough patches, but in life those down times and valleys are the times you learn a lot about yourself and you have the choice to persevere and become more mature and compete through it all. I'm hopeful our players will be better in the end because of what they learned this year. I know I personally feel that way.
"I'd like to thank Donika (Bashota), Alexis (Pereira) and Aleksandra and our whole staff for their leadership and support this year. There were many times we could've just given up and thrown in the towel on the season, but I feel everyone started engaged and allowed to have this opportunity today, and I'm grateful for that. As for the future of this program, this summer will be important. The core of our team will need to make some strides and get the culture going that will produce better performance. We expect to win this conference and make runs at NCAAs. That expectation and target will never change."
