
WTEN Preview: Big 12 Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas – After earning a first round bye, the No. 25 TCU women’s tennis team will head to Norman, Okla., for the 2017 Big 12 Tournament that will run from April 28-30 at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma.
The Horned Frogs (13-8), who are the No. 5 seed in the tournament, will take on the No. 4 seed and No. 24 ranked Texas Longhorns (12-7) on Friday at 1 p.m., in the quarterfinals that will air live on FloTennis. This marks the fifth straight year that TCU has earned a bye in the opening round of the championship and the third time they will be facing Texas in the postseason.
TCU Notables
TCU won three of its final four matches of the season including a 4-1 upset of then-No. 7 Texas Tech in the home finale. The win over the Red Raiders marked the third straight season the Frogs have upset a top-15 opponent and the second time in the last three years the opponent has fallen inside the top-10.
In the rankings, Arantekin is still ranked in the singles poll at No. 57 with 17 wins on the season with 10 coming in dual match play. In the doubles poll, Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas hold the best team ranking at No. 17 with nine wins on the season and four over ranked opponents. Garrido-Rivas and Seda Arantekin are also in the doubles poll at No. 33 with a 5-1 mark in dual match play and three wins over ranked opponents.
Scouting the Longhorns
Texas has won nine Big 12 Championship tournaments, including the last tournament held at Oklahoma in 2013. The Longhorns have reached the finals at the Big 12 Championships a league-leading 16 times in the event's 20-year history. Senior Neda Koprcina has won her last eight singles decisions and is unbeaten in her last 11 singles matches dating back to March 5. Ranked No. 82, Koprcina hasn't dropped a conference singles match since her sophomore season.
