2/25/2017 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas - After going up 3-1 in the match, the No. 15 TCU women's tennis team could not hold on as No. 17 Duke won the final three singles matches to steal a 4-3 victory on Saturday night in Durham, N.C., at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (6-2) easily took the doubles point as they grabbed leads on all three courts against the Blue Devils (6-3). Seda Arantekin and Olaya Garrido-Rivas won their second straight match on court two, 6-1, before Aleksandra Zenovka and Alexis Pereira secured the 1-0 lead with a 6-2 win on court three.
Duke did not stay down for long as they picked up a straight set win on court two in singles to even up the match at 1-1. Sofiko Kadzhaya got her first win in a dual match this season and put TCU up 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win on court six and then Marie Norris made it 3-1 with a three-set victory on court five. The Frogs could not hold on, as two of the final three courts went the distance into third sets as the Blue Devils came back to take all three courts and secure the 4-3 win.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Tonight was what college tennis is all about - great atmosphere, great level and just solid match all around. We came out and really took over. Through the first two hours, it looked like we would dominate the whole match. A few things didn't go our way and Duke fought hard until the end and ultimately found a way to win. I'm proud of Olaya (Garrido-Rivas) and how she did a lot of the right things. Sometimes it turns into to a victory and sometimes not, but a player must put themselves in a position where they leave the courts with no regrets and I believe Olaya did that today. Unfortunately not everyone on our team can say that however, but in a way it's encouraging because by no means did we play our best today. We actually can improve a lot. We faced lots and lots of adversity today. We will face it again Tuesday and Saturday, and we will eventually overcome it with a victory."
