STILLWATER, Okla. - The run at the 2016 Big 12 Tennis Championship ended on Saturday afternoon for the No. 35 TCU women's tennis team, as the Horned Frogs dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 19 Texas Tech at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
The Horned Frogs (15-6) dropped the doubles point for only the fifth time this season to the Red Raiders (23-4) and then were defeated in straight sets on three of the four finished courts in singles to fall for the second straight season in the semifinals of the tournament.
The only win on the day for TCU came from junior Olaya Garrido-Rivas who scored her 22nd victory of the season. Garrido-Rivas was the only Frogs to pick up the win in her first set and then went on to defeat Lynn Kiro, 6-3, 6-2 on court four. With the win, Garrido-Rivas has now won four consecutive matches and is 11-1 at the No. 4 position.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Well that was not the way we wanted to go down today. I thought we had a few positions fight really hard and compete and give it their all. But to beat a top 20 team you need 9-for-9 matches with 100 percent fight and passion. We didn't have that. The positives to take away from today is that it exposed a lot of issues within our team that will be addressed the next 12 days in preparation for the NCAA Championships. Had that been our last match of the year, that would have been an awful way to end. Congrats to Texas Tech for playing a real solid match"
