AKRON, Ohio - Another solid effort on the rifle range helped the TCU Horned Frogs to a second place finish at the NCAA Championships. It marks the third time in program history the Horned Frogs have finished second (2007, 2009).
"Competing at NCAA's is as much mental as it is technical and the team came here this year with the confidence and skills needed to do well," said head coach Karen Monez. "The hard work put in throughout the season has resulted in one of the most successful Championships for the rifle team. Goals were set and met throughout the year, however, what really defines what a great season it was for the team is the three NCAA Championship trophies they are bringing back to TCU."
As a team, the Horned Frogs fired a team score of 2,361 in air rifle just four shots behind National Champion West Virginia's match best of 2,365. Combined with the smallbore score of 2,333 posted on Day 1, TCU turned in an aggregate score of 4,694.
The first air rifle relay of the day featured Hannah Black, Sally Li and Nicole Hankey. Li turned in a 590, while Black and Hankey each fired identical 588s.
In the second relay, TCU sent Mindy Miles and Rachel Garner to the line. Miles' turned in the second best mark of the afternoon with a 595, while Garner shot a 588.
Miles qualified for the finals where she finished second after shooting a 208.3. Her score was just .5 points off the lead.
The future is bright for the Horned Frogs who return four of the five shooters next season.
