Rifle Posts Solid Mark in NCAA Qualifier

FORT WORTH – A single shot separated TCU and Air Force in the NCAA qualifier as the Falcons escaped with a 4,686-4,685 victory Saturday at the TCU Rifle Range.
While the loss brings to a close TCU's 12-match winning streak, the Horned Frogs put up a solid aggregate score in its quest for a 10th straight NCAA appearance.
The official announcement from the NCAA regarding which eight teams will take part in the national championships will be on Thursday. The qualifier is one of the four scores used by the NCAA to determine the eight teams that will compete for the National Championship. The other three scores come from regular season action. All three regular season match scores must come from different match locations.
Air Force built a six-point cushion in team score in smallbore, topping the Frogs 2,325-,2319. Three of the Falcons' top shooters in smallbore posted scores of 580 or better. Spencer Cap posted the top mark in the discipline, shooting a 586. Rachel Garner and Hannah Black followed close behind with identical scores of 584. Mindy Miles finished sixth with a 579, followed by Nicole Hankey's 576.
TCU made up ground in air rifle, but fell two shots shy of completing the comeback. The Frogs fired a team score 2,366. The top three shooters in the discipline shot 592's, but 46 center shots from the Falcons' Spencer Brandon helped him finish first. Hankey fired 44 center shots to finish second and Miles 38 center shots for a third place finish. Black and Sally Li fired scores of 591.
Black was TCU's top shooter in the qualifier with an aggregate score of 1,175, tying Air Force's Spencer Cap, who took home top honors with a 74-68 edge in center shots.
The field of eight for the NCAA Championships will be announced on NCAA.com at 4 p.m. Thursday. The 2015-16 National Champion will be crowned March 11-12 in Akron, Ohio.
