FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 22 TCU women's tennis team got the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend started with a victory, as the Horned Frogs downed No. 42 Houston, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the indoor facility inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Frogs (1-0), who faced the Cougars (0-2) for the second straight season in the opening round of the Kick-Off Weekend, got the day started by picking up victories at the bottom of the lineup in doubles. Freshman Marie Norris paired up with Alexis Pereira and dominated court three, 6-1. Newcomers Mia King and Olaya Garrido-Rivas finished off the doubles point for TCU by taking a 6-4 win on court two.
Caroline Wegner only dropped two games in her singles match, as the junior put TCU up 2-0 in the match by easily handling Rocio Martin on court four, 6-1, 6-1. Houston responded by taking its only win of the day on court one, but the Frogs came back with Seda Arantekin defeating Maria Cardenas on court five, 6-4, 6-3, to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
Norris once again provided a much needed victory for TCU, as the freshman came through with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tina Rupert at the No. 2 spot to seal the team victory for the Frogs.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"I thought it was good to finally get the dual match season started. I thought the girls competed really well. They were shaky in a few areas, but Houston is a good team. I give them credit for a lot of things. I think there are a couple of things we are going to talk about tonight because we are going to have to bring it to a higher level tomorrow against Ohio State. They are a great team and they had a battle today against Pepperdine. But overall, I am just happy to get our season started and happy to get it started with a win.
"I thought we had a lot of people like Marie who first-time as a freshman clinched the match. That was big for her. Doubles got a little tight, but Marie also closed it out there. To have her as a freshman come in the first dual match and clinch the doubles and the singles is great."
