TCU Splits Dual Meet with West Virginia

FORT WORTH -- The women's swimming and diving team topped West Virginia 157-143, and the men fell 144-154 in a conference showdown that came down to the final event on Saturday.
"I couldn't be more proud of how our team competed today," said head coach Richard Sybesma. "It was a good Big 12 matchup between the Horned Frogs and the Mountaineers today."
In front of an energized, packed Rec Center, the meet was decided by the result of the last stretch of the 400-yard freestyle relay. The women's relay team of senior Mikayla Winkler, and freshmen Bryn Lohrberg, Micaela Roemer and Ally Robertson finished the race in 3:31.92, securing the victory for TCU.
"To take it to the last length of the meet was phenomenal. We had a lot of support from our students and our faculty and staff members. It was an unbelievable atmosphere to have that many people supporting us."
The men's 400-yard freestyle was decided by two-hundredths of a second. West Virginia's men's team edged out the win with a time of 3:02.45.
Overall, the Frogs placed first in 14 events on Senior Day.
Freshman Maddie Ibrahim, sophomore Devin Newton, Roemer and Lohrberg opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:44.95.
Junior Chris Hearl, senior Ford Story, sophomore John Smith and junior Garrett Hills followed also placed first in the relay at 1:31.07.
Sophomore Connor Dobbs led the men's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:37.57. Freshman Rhorer Legendre rounded out the top two at 9:39.58. Dobbs also topped the results of the 500-yard freestyle at 4:39.75.
TCU went on to win both 200-yard freestyle events. Winkler recorded a first-place time of 1:52.14, and freshman Tommy Thach led the men's race at 1:40.66.
Newton and junior Ashley Dyke took the top-two times in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:04.23 and 1:04.92, respectively. Dyke also placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.69.
The Frogs also earned the top finishes in both 200-yard butterfly races. Senior Catherine Rash won the women's race with a time of 2:05.30, and sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt clocked in at 1:49.97.
Hills recorded a first-place time of 20.50 in the men's 50-yard freestyle.
In the women's 100-yard butterfly, Roemer placed first with a time of 56.90. Senior Maggie Burkhardt followed closely with a second-place time of 57.44.
The Frogs took the top two times in the women's 200-yard IM with Newton placing first at 2:06.18 and Rash taking second at 2:09.54.
The women's team moved to 4-0 all-time against the Mountaineers after Saturday's contest.
The Horned Frogs will return to action on Jan. 29 as the women's team takes on North Texas in Denton.
