FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 27 TCU women's tennis team snapped SMU's seven-match home winning streak by handing the Mustangs a 6-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Horned Frogs (7-5) took command from the beginning by snagging the doubles point against the Mustangs (7-3) and then dominated singles action by notching victories on five of the six courts.
"Today was a great way to end the first half of our season," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "SMU can be dangerous if given the opportunity. We had a few lapses, but quickly regrouped to finish well.
"We are going to take the next three days off, take a break now and regroup before we start the Big 12 season. We are excited about what we were able to accomplish in the first half of the season. Now we are just focused on getting ready for the second half of the season."
In doubles action, SMU was able to get the first victory, but TCU finished the battle by taking wins on the final two courts for the doubles point. Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan got on the board first with the duo's 11th win this season with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova.
The match came down to court three, with Sofiko Kadzhaya and Simona Parajova finishing off the doubles point for TCU with a 6-4 win over Yana Erkeeva and Mary Wright.
No. 48 Parajova kept the winning going for the Frogs in singles action, as the senior upped her season total in wins to 16 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anna Kate Anderson at the No. 2 position.
Alexis Pereira got her 13th win of the season at No. 6 singles and pushed the TCU lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wright. The Frogs would not be able to wrap the match up easily, as SMU claimed the win at No. 4 singles to put the score at 3-1.
The clincher for the Frogs would come from their second senior, as Tan completed the victory with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 win over Hristina Dishkova. Arantekin and Kadzhaya would round out the wins for TCU for the match, as Arantekin defeated Bulgakova at No. 5 singles and Kadzhaya picked up her 10th win of the season with a win at No. 3 singles.
TCU will next see action on the road, with a trip to the state of Kansas to start Big 12 action. The Frogs will open at Kansas State on March 13, before traveling to Lawrence to take on Kansas on March 15.
