Rifle Stays Busy During Season Break

FORT WORTH - Six members of the TCU rifle team recently took part in the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships which was part one of the US Olympic Team Air Rifle Trials.
Hannah Black, Kelly Bogart Rachel Garner, Mindy Miles, Barrett Ray and Sally Li participated in the women's Air Rifle Competition and were eligible for awards in both the open and junior category. Also competing at the event were a trio of alumns in Sarah Beard, Erin Lorenzen McNeil and Sarah Scherer. 2016 signee Casey Lutz also took part.
Miles had a fantastic showing at the championships, earning a spot in five of six finals (two open finals and all three junior finals). Black made it to the finals on day two, while Beard and Scherer qualified for all three open finals. In total, there were 162 athletes competing in the Women's Air Rifle championships. The top 10 from the three day match will be invited to the second Air Rifle Olympic team trials being held in June. Four of the top 10 are current or former Frogs in Beard, Scherer, Miles and Black.
On day one, three of the eight finalists were Horned Frogs. Scherer finished first followed by Miles in second and Beard in third. The finals on day two featured four Frogs. Beard took home the top spot, with Scherer finishing fourth, Miles fifth and Black sixth. On day three, the finals featured a trio of Frogs. Scherer took home her second win of the championships, while Beard finished second and McNeil seventh.
In the junior finals, Miles qualified all three days turning in a seventh place finish on day one, a third place finish on day two and a second place finish on day three. She finished the Junior Championships in second place overall. She received the High Collegiate Award, which was based on aggregate total from all three days.
Total points earned include the 40-shot qualifying score as well as points for finals placement (the top eight after qualifications participated in the final) with eight points going to the winner of the final, seven for second place down to one point for an eighth place finish in the final. Beard earned a 1.9 point win after the event's best competitive battle. Scherer actually won two of the three finals, but Beard had the top overall qualifying score and finished first, second and third in each of three finals. Miles finished fifth overall and Black eighth.

Over 430 athletes were in attendance at the event formally known as the Winter Airgun Championships with five total Olympic spots available including two in Men's Air Rifle and one each in Women's Air Rifle, Men's Air Pistol and Women's Air Pistol. The two-part Olympic Trials consists of three straight days of competition featuring three qualifiers and three separate finals. Each day's qualifying scores and points from the event finals will be added to each competitor's score to get a cumulative total. The top-10 participants in each discipline will then advance to the final stage of Airgun Team Trials next June. No Team spots were secured during this first stage of these Olympic Team Trials all competitors will "start from zero" at the second stage with the winner earning a coveted spot on the Rio Olympic team.
