FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU women's tennis junior Sofiko Kadzhaya claimed her second singles title of the fall this past weekend, as the Odessa, Ukraine native captured the Flight A singles crown at the Wild West Shootout II in Denton, Texas.
Kadzhaya opened the tournament with straight-set victories in the opening two rounds. The junior dominated Agustina Serio of UTA, 6-1, 6-0, before downing Anna Dollar of Liberty, 6-4, 6-4.
The final two rounds were a battle for Kadzhaya, as she had to go three sets to pull out the victories. The Ukraine native first defeated Belen Rivera of Liberty, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to move into the finals and face another Liberty opponent in Maria Khval. Kadzhaya dropped the first set, 6-2, but rebounded to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3, and the crown.
Quotes from the Weekend
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"This fall has been really good for Sofiko. In the past, she's been unpredictable in her results and would beat very good players, and at other times she would lose to players that she is much better than. However, this fall, at the OU tourney, SMU tourney and now here at UNT, she started to show some consistency in her performance. This all reflects the mental toughness and growth she is having. She is keeping her composure out there much better than in the past and I'm really proud of her"
