FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis doubles team of Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner were able to grab a victory in the consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The duo had to battle through two three set matches on the opening day of the tournament, as they faced Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev of Columbia in the first round of the main draw. After dropping the first set, the duo bounced back to force a super tiebreaker third set, but the Columbia pair ultimately came away with the 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory.
To close out the first day, Arantekin and Wegner had to face the No. 1 team in Division II in Rosalie Willig and Diana Bogolii of Lynn University. Willig and Bogolii pulled out the win in the first set, 6-4, but TCU fought back to dominate the second set, 6-1. The Frog pair did not let up and took the third set super tiebreaker, 10-7, to win their first match of the tournament.
Quotes from the Day
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"I am proud of Caroline and Seda bouncing back this evening. Their first round was not a good performance, even though they found a way to extend it to a third. In the second round, they really improved their commitment to the details starting in the second set and played with some more passion. Any victory up here takes a great effort and we will need another one tomorrow against the pair from North Carolina."
