ELLINGTON, CONNECTICUT -- TCU claimed the team championship and TCU senior Paul Barjon took home individual honors on Tuesday as the Horned Frogs completed play in the Connecticut Cup at Ellington Ridge Golf Course.
TCU's team finish of 19-under par, 845, set a new tournament record, besting the 3-over par 867 posted by UConn in 2014. It is the first time in the seven-year history of the tournament that a team has finished under par at Ellington Ridge Country Club. Boston College and Dartmouth finished second at 862.
The team championships is the first for TCU since winning the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in the spring and is the first fall tournament title for TCU since the 2012-13 season when the Horned Frogs won the Carmel Cup. It is the 32nd team title for a Bill Montigel led team at TCU and the 37th team title overall.
Barjon shot a final round score of 68 to finish at 11-under par at 205, setting a new Connecticut Cup record that was previously held by UConn's Zach Zaback in 2013 at 209 and 7-under par. The second place effort of junior Chelso Barrett, playing nearing his hometown of Keene, N.H., this week, would have also set a new tournament record had it not been eclipsed by his teammate. Barrett shot a final round score of 71 to post a three-round score of 206 and finish 10-under par.
Barjon won his second individual crown as a TCU Horned Frog having previously won the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., during the 2012-13 fall season. Barjon finished at 11-under for the tournament finish first in the 96 player field.
The duo of Barjon and Barrett combined to shoot 21-under par at the tournament over three rounds.
It is the 35th time during the Montigel era that a TCU player has earned individual honors at a tournament and first since Julien Brun took home top honors at the NCAA's San Antonio Regional in the spring of 2014. It is the first fall tournament title for a TCU player since Brun won the Carmel Cup in 2012-13.
The tournament is the final event of the fall for the TCU Men's Golf program. The spring schedule for TCU begins in February.
