AUSTIN, Texas--A solid opening-day effort by senior Johan de Beer Friday helped the TCU men's golf team grab fourth-place position following the first two rounds of play at the annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club.
TCU's five-man team combined to shoot a 5-over par score of 573 during the first two rounds, which ranks fourth place in the 12-team field. Texas (-7) tops the team leaderboard. The Horned Frogs will enter Saturday's final round only six strokes behind second-place New Mexico (-1).
Pacing TCU's efforts on Friday was de Beer, who is tied for sixth place at -2 after posting scores of 68 and 72 on the par-71 course. The Pretoria, South Africa, native is six shots back of tournament leader Geoff Shaw of Texas A&M, who leads the field at -6.
Freshman Julien Brun is the second Frog on the leaderboard in a share of 14th place at even par. Brun fired a 2-under 69 in Round 1 before posting a 2-over 73 during the second 18 holes. Junior Daniel Jennevret sits two shots behind Brun (+2) in a tie for 20th place after carding rounds of 73 and 71. Sophomore Ian Phillips is tied for 42nd place at +7, while freshman Johnny Antle, who is tied for 53rd at +11, rounded out the Frog competitors.
TCU wraps up competition at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate Saturday with the final round of play. First groups are scheduled to tee off at 8:15 a.m.
