FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team opens play Friday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on the courts of Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
The event features 18 schools from the state of Texas, which make up the ITA Texas Region. Those competing in the 128-player singles draw and 64-team doubles draw in addition to TCU are Baylor, Houston, Lamar, North Texas, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, UT Arlington, UTEP, UT-Pan American and UT-San Antonio.
The winners of the draws advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. TCU has advanced competitors to the event on eight different occasions, including a year ago.
At last year's USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, TCU's Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith stormed through the doubles bracket to become the first Horned Frogs representatives since 2008. The tandem, which is ranked No. 16 in the ITA preseason rankings, went 5-0 last year.
Nichols and Smith headline the TCU doubles entrants, while sophomores Stefanie Tan and Simona Parajova are No. 56 and No. 87, respectively, in the ITA singles rankings. TCU has also gotten contributions this fall from newcomer Monika Sirilova.
