FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team continued its recent run of hot play and opened the Mountain West Conference season on the right foot with a 6-1 dismantling of BYU on Friday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"I thought we competed well today, especially in the big points," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "It was good to start with a win and we've just got to keep building from here forward. Once we get back to the locker room, it's time to focus on the next match."
The Frogs wasted no time getting on the board Friday, grabbing wins in all three doubles matches. TCU's No. 3 doubles team of Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg struck first, dropping Elle Carney and Aubrey Paul, 8-5.
Gaby Mastromarino and Olivia Smith, the No. 3 doubles tandem, made it 1-0 for the Purple and White with their 8-5 dismissing of Elizaveta Ezhova and Desiree Tran. TCU's No. 1 duo of Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa continued the Frog onslaught with an 8-6 win over Callie Craig and Megan Price.
Tuohimaa got right to work for TCU at No. 1 singles, grabbing a 6-3, 6-1 win over BYU's Price. The Helsinki, Finland, native is 5-7 this spring. Smith made it 3-0 in favor of the Frogs when she took care of Tran, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
TCU's Sahoo ran her winning streak to six matches with a 7-6 (4), 6-0 win over Paul at the No. 6 slot. The New Delhi, India, native clinched the match for TCU and is 8-4 during the spring.
With the match in hand for TCU, Denti added a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 1-0 (3) triumph at the expense of Craig at No. 2 singles. The Bellano, Italy, native is on a five-match winning streak and is 6-4 overall.
Mastromarino improved her team-best singles mark to 8-2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at No. 3 singles to make it a 6-0 lead for TCU. BYU got its lone point in a three-set match at No. 5 singles.
The Frogs improved to 6-6, 1-0 MWC, while the Cougars dropped to 5-8, 0-1.
