TCU Garners 4-3 Win over Wichita State Friday

WICHITA, Kan. -- The TCU women's tennis team claimed a 4-3 decision against Wichita State Friday at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Center. Junior Katariina Tuohimaa clinched the victory from the No. 3 position.
"It was nice to put a complete match together and come out on the winning side," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "I thought the girls fought really hard today. It was pretty windy and they had to really focus to get the job done. I'm proud of our doubles play. We have now taken the doubles point in seven of our matches this season and I am really happy about that."
TCU swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage in the match. Junior Idunn Hertzberg and sophomore Gaby Mastromarino picked up the first win for the Frogs, while senior Nina Munch-Soegaard and junior Maria Babanova clinched the point with an 8-3 decision from the middle court.
Mastromarino kept the balling rolling for TCU to start singles play, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Shockers' Lily Wakim from the sixth flight. The Tequesta, Florida native found herself down 3-2 in the first set, before battling back to take the frame.
After Wichita State took a point from the No. 4 position, No. 89 Munch-Soegaard stepped up to give TCU a 3-1 lead by upending No. 34 Lutfiana Budiharto from the top court. The win is the fourth of the season for the Frogs' team captain.
No. 100 Tuohimaa followed to clinch the victory for the Frogs. The Helsinki, Finland stole the opening set 6-3, before falling down 3-5 in the second frame. After fighting off a pair of set points, Tuohimaa battled all the way back to take the stanza and the match 6-3, 7-5.
"Katariina was down two set points in the second set and battled back from being down 3-5 to win 7-5," Hammond said. "That was really huge. We just hope to continue to improve as a unit. We have a tough match against No. 3 Notre Dame tomorrow. We need to come out swinging."
TCU will return to the Coleman Tennis Complex to take on No. 3 Notre Dame at 10 a.m.
