TCU junior Scott Roudebush (Austin, Texas | Austin H.S.) captured his first tournament championship of the summer as the Austin native recorded a playoff victory at the 2009 Firecracker Open at the Lions Municipal Golf Course this past weekend.
After 54 holes of action, Roudebush and Matt Smith of St. Edward's (Texas) University were tied at 13-under-par then proceeded to go to sudden death where play was suspended due to darkness after six holes. After the six holes of action, Roudebush and Smith remained tied and for the first time in Firecracker Open history, the tournament went to a fourth day.
On Monday, Roudebush and Smith remained even after the first hole of the day then the TCU junior was able to claim the tournament championship on the par-five second hole. After reaching the green in two shots, Roudebush missed an eagle putt, but came back to sink the birdie putt to beat Smith, who finished with par on the hole.
This was the second top-five showing of the summer season for Roudebush as the TCU junior recorded a third-place finish at the Palmetto Amateur in June. Roudebush finished with runner-up honors at the 2008 Firecracker Open.
With Roudebush's victory, this marked the third gold medal for a TCU golfer as the Austin standout joined Travis Woolf (Southwestern Amateur) and James Sacheck (Texas Amateur) with tournament championship victories.
