FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Kaylie Garcia netted a goal in the 88th minute, but it wasn't enough as San Diego State upended TCU, 4-1, in front of a record crowd of 2,713 spectators at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium on Friday night.Garcia brought the Frogs within three late in the match, scoring from about 40 yards out at the 87:55 mark of the second half. The goal for Garcia was her third goal of the season.
Early in the contest, Katie Taylor appeared to have put the Frogs on the board, but her free kick sailed wide of the goal to keep the score knotted at 0-0. A few moments later, Lizzy Karoly, a senior from Escondido, Calif., almost found the back of the net off a header from inside the box, but Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick came up with a save to keep the Purple and White off the scoreboard.
SDSU got on the board in the 17th minute of the match when Niki Fernandes found the back of the net from inside the box.
Following a shot by Taylor in the 40th minute, sophomore Kaitlyn Shelledy appeared to have tied the match at 1-1 right before intermission, but her shot was saved by Southwick.
Early in the second half, Michelle Nguyen tried to put the Frogs on the board off a cross from Jackie Torda, but her shot just missed finding the back of the net. Midway through the half, Nikki Wilbur fired a shot from the middle of the box, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Sarah Halverson put the Aztecs ahead by two in the 70th minute of the match off an assist by Fernandes.
Shelledy tried to rally the Frogs following the goal, but her blast in the 76th minute was saved by Southwick.
The Atecs' Megan Jurado and Taylor Canatsey added to the SDSU lead late in the match before Garcia beat SDSU goalkeeper Aubree Southwick to close the scoring from 40 yards out.
TCU pressured San Diego State late in the second half, but Karoly couldn't crack the scoring column off a pass from fellow senior Nguyen. Taylor appeared to have scored in the 86th minute off a corner kick by Alex Mechalske, but the Frogs were called for a foul in the box to nullify the goal.
Mechalske and Taylor tried one last time to put the Frogs within reach in the final minute of the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net.
For the match, TCU outshot the Aztecs, 17-15, including 11-9 in the second half. Taylor led the Horned Frog offensive attack with five shots, two of which came on goal. Kelsey Walters saved four shots on Friday night, while Southwick totaled six saves.
Karoly, Nguyen and Kelly Faerber played their final home game in front of 2,713 people on Friday night. That mark crushed the previous attendance record of 2,248, which was set against Texas A&M in 2005.
The Frogs, who are 9-9-0 on the season and 2-5-0 in conference play, could still qualify for postseason play with a UNLV loss or draw to New Mexico on Saturday night in Albuquerque.
