Horned Frogs take down undefeated Tigers
FORT WORTH – Behind a dominant four-goal first half, the second-seeded TCU women's soccer team defeated Memphis, 4-0, on Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
TCU (17-2-2, 9-1-1 Big 12) took immediate control of the game from the moment the ball was kicked off and put numbers on the scoreboard to show for it. Coming into tonight Memphis had earned 12 shutouts on the season and allowed just six goals during the course of the regular season, but the Frogs put up a 4-0 ledger in the first 45 minutes that would be all they needed to take down the Tigers.
Exactly two minutes into the game, Emma Yolinsky sent in a lofted through ball right to Seven Castain who converted on the chance. Seven minutes later, Sydney Becerra lofted in a corner kick that was deflected by Morgan Brown and landed right near Katana Norman who converted and out the Frogs up 2-0.
The scoring was not done there, as moments later in the 12th minute Kamdyn Fuller fell down in the penalty box and no foul was called. After an official review, it was determined Fuller was fouled and a penalty kick was rewarded. Becerra scored on and converted the chance to increase the Frogs' advantage.
Closing in on the final five minutes of the match, Marli Galdamez dribbled a ball to Castain who put on a display of moves and rocketed in a left-footed shot to increase the advantage to four.
The second half was filled with a more competitive nature between the two squads. The Frogs barely outshot Memphis 8-6, and the two teams earned their fair share of chances. However, no true momentum was gained by either squad and both teams posted shutouts in the final 45 minutes. TCU was able to hold onto its early lead and punch its ticket to the NCAA Third Round.
Olivia Geller played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
Senior forward Seven Castain on being in this position in her senior season…
"It's kind of a dream. Senior year, I've been here when we were in the Sweet Sixteen my freshman year, and I was also here the year that we didn't make the tournament. I think that it's just a blessing to be here. To do it in my senior year with people that I love and care about is a great way to keep going. This team has so much potential, and I'm really excited to see where we take it."
