ATHENS, Ga. - -The TCU women's tennis team showed well in its singles matches Saturday, winning 10 of 17 meetings against members from Duke, Georgia, Indiana and Wake Forest on the second day at the Bulldog Invitational. Senior Macall Harkins and sophomore Maria Babanova each defeated ranked opponents.
"Macall and Maria each had nice wins today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "Macall played her game and executed well, while Maria played very steady at the level that she is capable of playing at day in and day out."
Babanova had the best results for the Frogs, winning both of her matches over Duke's 119th-ranked Jessi Robinson, 6-2, 6-2 and Ryan Cutillo from Wake Forest, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Both TCU freshman also remained unbeaten for the weekend, as Kayla Duncan defeated Indiana's Myriam Sopel, 6-1, 6-1 and Gaby Mastromarino topped Georgia junior Lara Fakhoury on her home court, 7-5, 6-3.
"The freshman refuse to lose," Hammond said. "I can't say enough about the early results that I have seen out of our newcomers."
Harkins, as well as sophomores Idunn Hertzberg and Katariina Tuohimaa went 1-1 on the evening. Harkins was dropped by Duke's No. 18 Ellah Nze, 6-2, 7-5, but defeated No. 50 Sasha Kulikova, from Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-1. Hertzberg topped Duke's Melissa Mang, 7-5, 6-1, but failed to get past Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh, 6-0, 6-1. Tuohimaa fell in her first match to Duke's 17th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka, 6-3, 6-0, but composed herself and got the best of Sierra Poske of Wake Forest, 6-0, 6-2.
While TCU top-ranked singles players did not earn a win Saturday, senior Anna Sydorska and Nine Much-Soegaard faced stiff competition. Sydorska fell to Duke's Amanda Granson, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 106 Amanda Rales form Virginia, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Munch-Soegaard dropped matches to No. 60 Tara Iyer, 6-2, 6-4 and No. 68 Jennifer Stevens, 6-2, 6-3.
