AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 15 TCU women's tennis team fell to No. 39 Auburn by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The loss drops the Horned Frogs to 7-4 this season, while Auburn improves to 12-3 overall."The match ended in dramatic fashion, much like the Fresno State match earlier," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "We're doing the right things. Nobody backed off and Auburn just had a little more in the end. It was pretty obvious they were playing with a lot of confidence from the start, as they won the doubles point and took the 3-0 lead. We did our best to climb back, which we did, and I'm proud of the effort of all the players."
The TCU duo of Nina Munch-Soegaard and Katariina Tuohimaa began doubles play with a dominating 8-1 victory over Jil Hastenrath and Gaby Beelen. The Tigers would rebound to win the remaining two matches to clinch the doubles point, including an upset of TCU's 14th-ranked duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska at the top position.
The Tigers quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match by winning singles matches at the top two positions to force TCU to win all remaining four contests.
Harkins began the rally with her third consecutive victory, downing Melissa Konig at the No. 3 position by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Idunn Hertzberg followed with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dunja Djuranovic at the No. 6 slot to push TCU within one point in the match.
Tuohimaa, a freshman from Helsinki, Finland, tallied her seventh consecutive victory with a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6, 6-0 victory over Hastenrath to knot the match.
The match would come down to the No. 5 singles position, where Auburn's Beelen would outlast TCU's Kewa Nichols by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 to seal the match for the Tigers.
The Frogs will return to action on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT against Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.
