CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia - TCU junior Nina Munch-Soegaard toppled 2008 NCAA Champion and third-seeded Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Championships Thursday. TCU's doubles duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska also advanced in the first day of action.
"This is the second reigning NCAA champion that Nina has defeated. Last fall, she beat Audra Cohen (2007 NCAA Champion) and now this fall she has beaten McDowell," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "She has the momentum, now moving forward, she just needs to take one match at a time."
Munch-Soegaard, ranked No. 47 in the country, took down McDowell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, despite being down 4-2 in the second set. She will face No. 30 Samantha Murray from Northwestern in the round of 16 Friday.
Harkins and Sydorska, ranked ninth nationally, cruised in their opening match, 8-5, over Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff. The senior tandem will now take on Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic from Texas in the round of eight, the team that TCU defeated, 8-2, in the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships semifinals.
"The doubles team came out and played a solid match," Hammond said. "Anna and Macall are quite a team. They made it to the semifinals last year, this is Anna's fourth Indoors, so they looked pretty comfortable out there."
With Thursday's win, Sydorska has advanced to at least the doubles quarterfinal round of the ITA Indoor Championships all four years in her career.
