TCU Prepares for Wilson/ITA Regional Quarters

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team wrapped up the third day of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship Saturday. Nina Munch-Soegaard won two matches to advance into the singles quarterfinals for the second-straight year, alongside fellow Horned Frog Macall Harkins, while the duo of Harkins and Anna Sydorska and Maria Babanova and Munch-Soegaard advanced into the doubles quarterfinals.
"We battled today and had some really nice results," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "Now we have to dig deep as we head towards the finish line."
Munch-Soegaard, ranked 47th in the nation in singles, slid past Rebecca Lin of Rice by a score of 7-5, 6-3 to enter the round of 16. Munch-Soegaard followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Monika Hodvigerova of UTA to propel into the singles quarterfinals. Harkins took on Samantha VanderDrift from Texas Tech in her round of 32 match, cruising by the Red Raider in impressive fashion, 6-1, 6-0, and entered the quarterfinals after her opponent, No. 1 seed Lenka Broosova of Baylor, had to bow out due to injury.
In doubles main draw, Harkins and Sydorska took down the 12th-seeded Kelsy Garland and Samantha VanderDrift from Texas Tech, 8-3, to advance into the quarterfinals Sunday. Babanova and Munch-Soegaard earned a pass into the quarterfinals after Baylor's pairing of Broosova/Borsanyi had to leave the tournament early because of Broosova's injury.
Sydorska, Katariina Tuohimaa and newcomer Gaby Mastromarino all won matches in the singles round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Sydorska defeated Whitney Wolf of LSU 6-3, 6-2 before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to 18-ranked and No. 4 seed Taylor Ormond from Baylor. Tuohimaa earned her win over No. 125 and 13th seed Mariaryeni Gutierrez, before falling to No. 27 and 3rd seed Csilla Borsanyi from Baylor, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, and Mastromarino topped 14th seed Stephanie Davison from UT 6-1, 6-2, before dropping her round of 16 match to Lauren Santacroce, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3.
In the singles consolation draw, sophomores Idunn Hertzberg and Babanova had impressive showings Saturday. Hertzberg, a native of Oslo, Norway, took a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6) decision over Roxana Enica of Stephen F. Austin and followed with 4 -1 (retired) victory over Irina Paraschiv of North Texas to reach the quarterfinals. Babanova took down Kristen Reid from SMU, 7-5, 6-3 and also Joanna Kacprzyk from Houston, 4-6, 6-1, 10-1. Newcomer Kayla Duncan also earned wins in both of her consolation singles draw matches, defeating UTA's Klara Jagosova, 6-2, 6-0, and Baylor's Kasia Siwocz, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
