TCU Completes Day Two of Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas - Five of TCU's eight players advanced into the round of 32 in main draw singles at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"It was a solid day. We swept the doubles - this tournament is unique because it gives us the opportunity to play numerous rivals in the same day," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "Having said that, today we defeated LSU, Texas A&M and Texas."
Seniors Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska both advanced after earning wins in their opening singles matches. Harkins, a Palos Verdes, Calif., native, topped Mykala Hedberg from LSU in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Sydorska, No. 95 in the country in singles play, picked up her win over Julie Mazinova from University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Gaby Mastromarino also worked her way into the win column, grinding out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Houston's Lucy Forward. Sophomore Katariina Tuohimaa also battled her way into the next, defeating Ashley Turpin from Texas A&M, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
Wrapping up the evening for the Horned Frogs, junior Nina Munch-Soegaard finished with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Maggie Mello from Texas in a match that lasted over three hours.
"The great thing about the fall and this event is that you get a chance to test a lot of the things that you've been working on in practice, and then see if they stick. It's a great learning process and a real chance for everyone to grow their games," Hammond said.
TCU will resume play Saturday, day three of the five-day tournament. Main draw singles will resume at 9 a.m., followed by main draw doubles.
