TCU Sweeps Past First Day of Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team cruised through the opening day of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, sweeping the day with three doubles wins.
"This is a big event and we aren't always going to come out and play perfect tennis, but when we don't, we still have to find a way to win and we did that today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "I'm happy and looking forward to tomorrow."
The freshman duo of Kayla Duncan and Gaby Mastromarino earned the first win for the Horned Frogs, topping Ashley Ellis and Saskia Kruse from Texas State, 8-4. With the win, the pairing moves to 6-1 for the year and will take on Mariaryeni and Mariantonieta Guterriez in the round of 32 at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Junior Nina Munch-Soegaard and sophomore Maria Babanova took the second match for TCU, grinding out a 9-8 (3) victory over Carlene Leyden and Julia Wiegand from Texas. The ninth-seeded pairing in the tournament advances to face Julie Chao and Analy Guzman from Rice in the round of 32 at 12:30 Friday.
In the final match of the day for TCU, sophomores Katariina Tuohimaa and Idunn Hertzberg took on Andrea Giraldo and Katie O'Riley from Texas State, blanking the Bobcats, 8-0. The duo will take on UTEP's Weronika Bloczynska and Martina Trierweiler in the round of 32 Friday.
TCU will enjoy a busy day Friday, as all eight players make their individual debut for the tournament in main draw singles, while also fielding four doubles teams. Play will resume at 9 a.m. Friday, although the Frogs do not begin play until 12 p.m. with the ninth-ranked senior squad of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska in doubles play.
