SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - It was a roller coaster day for TCU junior James Sacheck. On Wednesday morning, Sacheck officially reached the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship. However, hours later he was eliminated from the tournament after a tough 1 up defeat in the afternoon round.
After finishing stroke play with a two-round total of 145 (+5), the Zionsville, Ind., native was forced to wait overnight to make sure his score would be among the top 64 when the rest of the field completed play.
His 145 proved to be two shots in the clear, as Sacheck wound up in a share for 39th place. His even-par 70 in the second round was one of just 24 par-or-better scores among the 312 competitors on the final day.
In his match with David McDaniel, Sacheck, who led after just one hole all day, leveled the score at all square with a par on the 17th. However, McDaniel birdied No. 18, a 347-yard par 4, for the final-hole victory. It was Sacheck's second straight appearance in the U.S. Amateur and his first time reaching the match play bracket.
Earlier, ex-TCU players Drew Stoltz and Aaron Hickman missed the match play cut. Stoltz, who graduated this spring, finished at 148 (+8) to miss a playoff for the final spots by just one stroke. Hickman fired a 70 on the second day to post a 36-hole 154 (+14).
The 107th U.S. Amateur Championship, which is conducted by the United States Golf Association, is being held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco from Aug. 20-26.
The USGA accepted more than 7,000 entries for the 2007 U.S. Amateur. Over two weeks, sectional qualifying was conducted over 36 holes at 100 sites to finalize the 312-person field. Following two rounds of stroke play, the low 64 amateurs compete in a match play elimination tournament until the championship, which will take place Sunday, Aug. 26.
