
Frogs tally three wins on Friday

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men and women's swimming and diving teams both defeated three schools on Friday at the University Recreation Center. The women's squad defeated Centenary, Incarnate Word and UT-Permian Basin, and suffered a loss to Northern Arizona, to improve to 3-2 on the year, while the men's team swept Centenary, Incarnate Word and UT-Permian Basin to move to 3-0 on the season.
"Our women are getting better with every meet," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma. I feel like they'll be there by the end of the season. Our men's team is strong and they did a good job today."
TCU senior Jonathon Berrettini highlighted action once again for the men's team, winning two events on the day. In the 200-IM, Berrettini took first-place with a clocking of 1:56.17. The Lewisville, Texas, native followed with a first-place showing in the 100-free in a time of 46.35. In the first two events of the season, Berrettini has recorded four wins.
Four other Frogs also claimed event wins on Friday. Cameron Allred, a senior from Fort Worth, won the 100-breast in a time of 59.12, while fellow senior Scott McCracken took the top spot in the 50-free with a clocking of 20.91. Jeff Gettel, a freshman from Plano, Texas, claimed his first collegiate victory in the 100-back with a time of 52.54.
R.J. Hesselberg, who was named the MWC Men's Diver of the Week on Thursday, won the one-meter dive for his third consecutive victory this season, while freshman Kyle Callens followed with a second-place showing.
Other notable performances came from Jeff Hendricks, Ben Iannacone and Edgar Peyro, who all recorded two top-three finishes.
The men swept the relay events in dominating fashion. The team of Berrettini, Allred, Jason Hauck and McCracken kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-medley relay in a time of 1:34.14, which was over four seconds ahead of the next squad.
The team of Berrettini, McCracken, Bagby and Josh Schifferer won the 200-free relay with a time of 1:24.06, which was also over four seconds faster than the runner-up. McCracken's split time of 20.44 places fourth fastest in TCU history, while Bagby's split time of 20.88 is a personal best.
The Frogs closed out the meet in the 400-free relay, as the team of McCracken, Hendricks, Bagby and Iannacone won in a time of 3:09.21, which was over five seconds faster than the next competitor.
On the women's side, freshman Jessica Miles highlighted action, winning her first two collegiate events. In the 200-free relay, Miles took the top spot in a time of 1:55.62. The Melbourne, Australia, native had an impressive showing in the 500-free, fighting back to edge the next competitor by four-hundredths of a second.
Fellow freshman Brittney Martinez also provided a win for the Frogs, taking the 100-back event in a time of 58.93 to notch her first collegiate victory. Martinez also placed second in the 50-free with a time of 24.90.
Melanie Cruthirds and Mychala Lynch both recorded two top-three finishes. Cruthirds placed second in the 100- and 200-free, while Lynch finished third in the 50- and 100-free. Stephanie Futscher, Meredith Grubb, Natalie Melenric, Katie Rosen and Crystal Shipps also added top-three finishes for the Frogs.
Nikka Campora, a freshman from Auburn, Calif., highlighted the one-meter diving event for the women, placing third.
In relay action, the team of Lynch, Martinez, Grubb and Cruthirds came away with the win to wrap up the meet with a time of 3:38.72 in the 400-free relay. The Frogs also recorded second-place finishes in the 200-medley and 200-free relays.
The men and women will return to the pool next Friday, as they will face Air Force at 4 p.m. at the University Recreation Center.
