FT. WORTH - With eight returning letterwinners and an energetic, enthusiastic head coach to lead the way, the TCU women's tennis team will open the 2006 fall campaign this weekend at Baylor University. Three Frogs will compete in singles action (Kewa Nichols, No. 80 Anna Sydorska and Karine Ionesco), while two new doubles pairs will represent TCU.
"This tournament is important because the two doubles teams are new," interim head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "This will give them the chance to build their confidence as a duo. The players have been working hard during the off-season, so we are ready to hit the courts."
The top-seeded and No. 24-ranked Sydorska/Ana Cetnik pair will have a first round bye and automatically advance to the quarterfinals of the Gold Draw. Meanwhile, the Nichols/Ionesco duo will open doubles play against SMU's Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch in the Round of 16 (Gold Draw).
"This weekend will allow our doubles teams to develop some chemistry," Hammond said. "It's premature to say whether these pairs will stay together, but it's possible. We will have to see how things develop over the course of the season."
The first edition of "This Week In TCU Women's Tennis" will come out Friday, right here at GoFrogs.com. Check back for all the news and notes on the Horned Frog program!
