Frogs, McLean on top following day one of Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio - Sophomore Jon McLean's 1-under score of 141 helped the TCU Horned Frogs surge to an eight-stroke lead after 36 holes of the 15-team Inverness Intercollegiate. On Tuesday, the Frogs will be gunning for their 12th team title since 2000 and first since claiming the 2005 Conference USA Championships.
TCU (594) recorded two of the six sub-300 team rounds at the historic Inverness Club (Par 71, 7,255 yards). USC and Coastal Carolina (602) are tied for second place, while perennial powers Georgia and Florida are tied for fourth at 606.
Courtesy of six birdies, McLean opened with a 2-under 69 to match the best score of the day and also tie his career-best effort. His two-round sum of 141 (-1) is six shots better than USC's Jamie Lovemark. McLean, who recently completed a run to the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur, is eyeing his first career tournament victory and third top-10 finish. The last TCU individuals to win a tournament crown were Colby Beckstrom and Drew Stoltz, who shared medalist honors at the 2005 C-USA Championships.
Fellow sophomore Jesse Speirs also enjoyed a fine day, as his 36-hole 150 (+8) has him in a share of 10th place. In just his fifth career appearance, he is looking for his first top-20 landing.
Another Frog in the hunt for a top-20 finish is Robby Ormand, who is tied for 26th place after rounds of 78-76--154 (+12). Just seven spots behind is Tom Miles, the fourth and final sophomore in the TCU lineup. Miles (155, +13) fired a 72 in the morning prior to an 83 in the afternoon.
Junior Franklin Corpening is tied for 45th place among the 75 competitors. The Fort Worth native owns a two-round total of 157 (+15).
Due to expected inclement weather in the area, the final round will feature a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (CDT). TCU will be paired with USC and Coastal Carolina. Live scoring of the tournament will be available on www.golfstat.com.
