FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women continued to play impressive fall tennis at the Wilson/ITA Women's Southwest Regional Championships on the TCU campus, as the Horned Frogs garnered an 8-2 record in singles play and had a doubles team reach the tournament's quarterfinals.
Sixteenth-seeded Kewa Nichols defeated Weronika Bloczynska of UTEP in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to advance into the round of 16. However, the junior from Austin suffered a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision to third-seeded Klara Zrustova of Baylor to fall just short of the main draw's quarterfinals.
Another TCU player also picked up another victory before bowing out, as No. 5 seed Anna Sydorska was an easy 6-1, 6-1 winner over SMU's Claire Rietsch. Sydorska's impressive run to the final 16 ended when Texas A&M's Elze Potgieter snagged a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
In doubles action, Sydorska and senior Ana Cetnik pulled off a heroic comeback win, as the team trailed 7-3 before storming back for a 9-8 result. That victory pushed the duo into the quarterfinals.
"We had great effort today across the board," said TCU interim head coach Jefferson Hammond. "It was a good day. Anna and Ana showed a never-say-die attitude and that really defined how the team played."
TCU continues the tournament on Sunday. Check the official tournament page on www.GoFrogs.com for draws and times.
