TCU finishes second by one stroke at Cleveland State Invitational

CHARDON, Ohio - The Horned Frog men's golf team narrowly missed its third team title in the past four events dating back to last year, as TCU finished just one shot behind Louisville at the Cleveland State Invitational. TCU entered the day with a six-stroke lead, but was overtaken by Louisville, which fired a tourney-best round of 282 (-2).
TCU, which competed with a group of five players who entered the tournament with a total of just 19 collegiate events under their belts, had too many big numbers in the final round. TCU had seven double-bogeys en route to a 298 (+14) on Tuesday after having just four double-bogeys or worse over the first 36 holes.
"We have a very young team, so this was a good learning experience for us," head coach Bill Montigel said. "We were able to play on the course that the Central Regionals will be played on in May and we learned that you have to play well all three rounds in order to win tournaments. There are so many good teams and good golfers out there."
Individually, sophomore Franklin Corpening recorded his first top-10 finish. He tied for sixth place individually after posting a team-best 1-over 72 in the final round. The Fort Worth native's three-round sum of 215 (+3) also marked the best score of his career.
In his first career tournament, true freshman Tom Miles earned a top-20 finish in his home state of Ohio. Miles (T-11th) notched a 74 on day two to tally a three-round score of 217 (+4). Senior Drew Laning's tie for 22nd place marked his career-best finish. The Little Rock, Ark., native had a 7-over 78 on Tuesday to wind up with a 221 (+8).
True freshman Jon McLean (Weston, Fla.) moved up seven spots into a tie for 35th after a final-round 74. McLean was 6-over through his first 10 holes on Tuesday, but played the last eight at 3-under. Junior Drew Stoltz recorded a 78 (+7) in his last round to slip into a tie for 39th with a 225. It was Stoltz's highest score in his last 18 rounds.
TCU is next in action at the Inverness Intercollegiate from Sept. 19-20. The tournament will be played at the par-71, 7,255-yard legendary Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Founded in 1903, the Inverness Club will host the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships and has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments including four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, one U.S. Amateur and one U.S. Senior Open.
