FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's swimming and diving team cruised to a 143-91 victory over Mountain West Conference rival Air Force, while the men were clipped 121-120 by the Falcons on Saturday afternoon at the University Recreation Center.
The men's competition came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. With TCU trailing 115-109, the Horned Frogs gained 11 points for a first-place finish courtesy of Yousif Del Valle, Diego Palacios, Teylor Arboleda and Jonathon Berrettini, but the Falcons grabbed six points by taking second and third place. The women improved to 2-1 in league action, while the men fell to 0-2 in MWC competition.
For the second straight day, a TCU diver broke a school record. This time, Kelly Seely bettered a 14-year-old women's mark with a 6-dive score of 322.28 on the 3-meter board. Former Horned Frog All-American Kelly Crowell had established the previous mark during the 1991 campaign.
The women dominated in the pool, winning 11 of the meet's 13 events. TCU started the day in fine fashion, taking the top three spots in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Lori Birkhead, Maribeth Pottenger, Erica Tate and Karen Sandifer nailed down the top spot in 4:03.12.
The lone double event winner individually for the Frogs was Emily Duerringer, who won the 200-free in 1:55.46 and the 100-free (53.87). Another highlight was TCU's sweep of the medal positions in the 50-free, with Tate touching the wall first in 23.78.
On the men's side, Alejandro Gomez won the men's 1000-yard freestyle with a clocking of 9:40.43. Del Valle claimed victory in the 100-yard freestyle (46.50), while Guillermo Ramirez won the 200-back in 1:51.66.
In addition, Kelly McCain won both diving events. He narrowly missed a record-breaking performance for the second straight day, as his 341.48 in the 3-meter was just two points shy of his total from Friday.
TCU is next in action on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m., when the men's and women's teams host Centenary, McMurry and Texas-Permian Basin at the University Recreation Center.
