FORT WORTH, Texas - The 29th-ranked TCU women's tennis team (20-4) defeated three seed Marquette, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in the title match of the 2002 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship. The championship is the third-straight for the Frogs who also won back-to-back titles in the Western Athletic Conference in 2000 and 2001, and the fourth in the program's history.
For the first time since February 21, TCU did not win the doubles point to open the match. Playing at No. 1, 20th-ranked Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez defeated Gen Charron and Anna Pavlovic, 8-1. During the match Charron twisted her ankle and was forced to withdraw from her position at No. 1 singles. The withdrawal forced Marquette to default at the six singles spot, and evened the match, 1-1, as the squads headed into singles play.
Paty Aburto earned the 6-0, 6-0 victory over Belle Espinosa at No. 1 singles to give the Frogs a 2-1 advantage. At five singles, Leoni Weirich played a solid match against Alex Stankovic and gave TCU its third point with her 6-1, 6-2 win. Katrin Gaber, playing at No. 2, gritted out a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory that came down to the tiebreaker to avoid the third set. Saber Pierce and Rosa Perez both battled back from first set losses to even things in the second and take the lead in the third sets, however their matches were called per conference rules.
"I couldn't be any happier than if we'd won the NCAAs," said head coach Roland Ingram who is retiring at the end of the 2001-02 season. "Marquette was really ready for us, and unfortunately for them, their No. 1 (Gen Charron) got hurt. This match could've gone down to the wire."
The Frogs now await the announcement of the NCAA Regional assignments. NCAA Regionals will be held at on-campus sites May 11 and 12.
