Frogs Host Tech in Classic
12/27/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
(Dec. 27) - The TCU Horned Frogs are back in action Thursday, December 28, as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the nightcap of the Fort Worth Classic. This is the first year of an annual event in which the TCU men's and women's team will play a doubleheader at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The Frogs look to get back on the winning track after suffering an 85-73 setback at Butler on Saturday in Indianapolis. TCU never had a lead in that contest as the Bulldogs scored the game's first 10 points and held a 43-30 advantage at halftime. Ryan Carroll was the top scoring Frog with 18 points. TCU shot nearly 55 percent from the field, including 53 percent from three-point land, but was outrebounded by a 32-17 margin and was outscored at the free throw line, 25-5 in the loss.
Head coach Billy Tubbs has the Frogs playing Billy Ball, again this season, a style that uses an aggressive, pressing defense and an attacking offense. The Frogs are the nation's top scoring team at 98.5 points per game and have been over the 100-point plateau six times in their 11 games this season, including a season-high 141 in a win over Central Oklahoma. Since Coach Tubbs took over the TCU program in 1994, the Frogs are 50-1 when they score 100 or more points. Now in his 27th season as a head coach, Tubbs has compiled an overall record of 567-274, including a 128-72 mark since coming to Fort Worth.
This is the 108th meeting between these two schools in a rivalry that dates back to 1932. Texas Tech leads the all-time series, 65-42, but TCU holds a 26-25 advantage in Fort Worth and has won the last three meetings.
TCU will be in action again on Saturday when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. That contest will mark the Frogs final non-conference tuneup prior to the start of the WAC season.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
The Texas Tech Red Raiders, out of Lubbock, Texas and the Big 12 Conference, present a formidable opponent due to the inside tandem of 6-11 Andy Ellis and 6-8 Cliff Owens. Ellis, a junior center, was a pre-season All-Big 12 selection and leads the Red Raiders in scoring at 16.2 ppg. Owens, a senior, is a space-eater at 240 pounds and is averaging 14 points a contest.
Texas Tech has featured a balanced scoring attack through the early part of the season. The man responsible for getting the ball to the hot hand is point guard Jamal Brown. Brown, a junior out of Dallas, averages 7.6 assists a game.
The Red Raiders are led by head coach James Dickey. Dickey, in his 10th season in Lubbock, owns a career record of 162-109, including a 12-16 mark during the 1999-2000 season.
This is the 108th meeting on the hardwood between these two former members of the Southwest Conference. Texas Tech leads the all-time series by a 65-42 count, but TCU holds a slim 26-25 advantage in Fort Worth and has won each of the last three meetings. The last time these two schools got together, TCU posted a 105-86 victory on December 8, 1998. Tech's last win came in Lubbock on February 7, 1996 by an 85-70 score.

The loss at Butler on Saturday marked TCU head coach Billy Tubbs' 200th game since taking over the Frogs' program.
