Frogs Put Streak On Line
12/22/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The Frogs are coming off a four-game homestand, one that saw them defeat VCU, Central Oklahoma, Princeton and, most recently, UT-Arlington by a 115-84 margin on Tuesday.
This is the second times these two teams have met on the hardwood. The Bulldogs surprised TCU with an 86-78 victory in Fort Worth on Dec. 27, 1999. Myron Anthony and Marquise Gainous each scored 20 for the Frogs in that contest, but TCU could not overcome a 12-point halftime deficit.
TCU boasts the highest scoring offense in the nation, averaging 101.1 points per game. They have done it with a balanced attack, as five players are scoring in double figures. Senior Ryan Carroll leads the way at 19.5 points per game. He is followed by Myron Anthony (15.8) and Greedy Daniels (15.2), with Derrick Davenport (14.5) and Bingo Merriex (10.2) also in double digits.
Head coach Billy Tubbs has the Frogs playing Billy Ball, a style that uses an aggressive, pressing defense and an attacking offense. The Frogs have been over the 100-point plateau six times in their 10 games this season, including a season-high 141 in a win over Central Oklahoma. Since Coach Tubbs took over the TCU program in 1994, the Frogs are 50-1 when they score 100 or more points. Now in his 27th season as a head coach, Tubbs has compiled an overall record of 567-273, including a 128-71 mark since coming to Fort Worth seven years ago.
TCU will be in action again next Thursday, December 28, when the Frogs take part in the Fort Worth Classic. The double-header at the Fort Worth Convention Center will feature the TCU women's team vs. Texas in a 5:30 p.m. battle, followed by the men's action which pits the Frogs against Texas Tech at approximately 8:00 p.m.
SCOUTING BUTLER
The Butler Bulldogs bring a 5-3 record into the contest against
TCU, but
their three losses have been by a combined eight points. They
suffered a
one-point loss at Evansville, dropped an overtime decision at
Indiana State,
then fell in a five-point decision to UNC-Wilmington. They have
wins over
Eastern Illinois, Birmingham-Southern, Ball State,
Tennessee-Martin and most
recently, Santa Clara by an 84-60 score on Dec. 20. They hit
17-of-29 from
three-point land in the win over Santa Clara.
The Bulldogs are coming off a successful 23-8 campaign, one that saw them reach the NCAA tournament. They return four starters and eight lettermen from a team that tied for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference championship with a 12-2 record.
Like the Horned Frogs, Butler uses a balanced scoring attack, as six players are scoring in double-digits for the Bulldogs. Senior guard LaVall Jordan tops the squad at 12.9 ppg. Thad Matta is in his first season leading the Bulldogs. He takes over for Barry Collier, who took the head coaching duties at Nebraska. Matta played collegiately at Butler, graduating in 90. He served as an asssistant under Collier for the last three seasons.

200 FOR TUBBS IN FROGLAND
TCU head coach Billy Tubbs is coaching his 200th game since taking
over the
Frogs' program. He has recorded a 128-71 record in six+ seasons
guiding the
TCU basketball fortunes, a .643 percentage.
DEFENSE
TCU held Princeton to just nine points in the first 14 minutes of
Monday's
game and allowed just 45 points in the contest. It was the fewest
points TCU
has allowed in a game since hammering SMU, 83-43 on February 3,
1990, a
stretch of 324 games.
STREAKING FROGS
TCU has won five straight games after losing two in a row in the
Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Tournament. They have won their last
10 games at
Daniel-Meyer Coliseum since a 101-96 setback to Fresno State on
January 15.
BALANCED ATTACK
The Frogs have five players averaging over 10 points per game.
Senior Ryan
Carroll tallied a career-high 40 points in the win over Central
Oklahoma and
leads the team in scoring at 19.5 points per game. Myron Anthony
scored a
careeer-high 38 in the win over Central Oklahoma and is next at
15.8. Greedy
Daniels poured in a career-high 31 vs. Minnesota and is right
behind at 15.2
points per game. Derrick Davenport is fourth on the list at 14.5.
Bingo
Merriex has come off the bench to chip in 10.2 ppg.
BOMBS AWAY
TCU has launched 30 or more shots from beyond the arc five times
this
season, including a school record 36 three-point attempts in the
win over
Central Oklahoma. To put that in perspective, coming into the
season they
had recorded just seven games in which they put up 30 or more
three-pointers
in their history (four coming last season). Through 10 games they
have taken
266 three-point shots, an average of 26.6 attempts per game.
They've hit 98
of those three-pointers, 36.8 percent accuracy, or an average of
9.8 made
three-pointers per game. Greedy Daniels (74), Ryan Carroll (69)
and Bingo
Merriex (55) have taken the majority of the long-range missiles.
HIGH SCORING FROGS
TCU is averaging 101.1 points per game, tops in the country. The
Frogs have
gone over the century mark six times in 10 games, tallied 99
points in
another contest and have scored more than 90 points eight times.
They have scored 100 or more points in five of six home games. They have surpassed the 100-point plateau 51 times since Coach Tubbs took over the program in 1994. The Frogs are 50-1 when scoring 100 or more points since Tubbs came aboard.
The lone loss was a 111-104 setback to Baylor on Feb. 14, 1995. Last season, TCU averaged 87.9 points per game to rank second in the nation. The Horned Frogs led the nation in scoring in both 1995 and 1998 and have led the WAC in scoring in all four years in which they've been members of the conference.
FOR STARTERS
Marlon Dumont has started each of the last two games, his first
two Division
I starts. He responded with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-7
shooting from
the field Monday vs. Princeton, then came back with his first
career
double-double on Tuesday vs. UTA.
CARROLL CLIMBS
Senior guard Ryan Carroll continues his assault on the TCU
all-time scoring
list. He has 98 points in the last four tilts and has scored 195
points this
season, an average of 19.5 points per game. In the process, he has
moved
into 13th place on the all-time list with 1,162 career points. He
needs 30
points to tie Dennis Nutt (1,192) for 12th place on the all-time
list.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
TCU guard Thomas McTyer has dished out a team-leading 60 assists
in nine
games, an average of 6.0 assists per game, while committing just
17
turnovers. He has an excellent assists-to-turnovers ratio of
3.5-1. The
senior from Las Vegas handed out a career-high 10 assists while
turning the
ball over just once in the win over Central Oklahoma.
ANTHONY COMES UP BIG
Myron Anthony has been a force in the middle for the Frogs this
season. The
6-7, 229-pound senior from Jacksonville, Fla. leads the team in
rebounds
(8.6 rpg) and is second on the team in points (15.8) ppg. He is
coming off a
17-point, career-high 15-rebound performance against UT-Arlington,
his
fourth double-double of the season.
GREED(Y) IS GOOD
Junior guard Greedy Daniels continues to show why he was named to
the WAC
Mountain Division All-Defensive Team in 1998-99 at UNLV. The
junior transfer
has recorded 42 steals in 10 games, an average of 4.2 thefts per
contest. He
has tied the school record with seven steals in a game twice this
season,
and has two other contests with six thefts. Mike Jones set the
school
records for steals in a season (96) and average steals per game
(2.9) in the
1997-98 campaign. Daniels also tied a school record with 16
assists in the
win over Central Oklahoma.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR DOUBLE D
TCU center Derrick Davenport has recorded four double-doubles this
season.
The 6-10 senior from Indianapolis is averaging 14.5 points and 8.3
rebounds
per game. He also has blocked 28 shots this season and has
rejected 124
shots since joining the Frogs last year.
