Frogs Play Back-To-Back
12/19/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The TCU Horned Frogs are in action for the second straight night as they host the UT-Arlington Mavericks in a 7:05 p.m. tilt at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Frogs are coming off a 76-45 victory over Princeton here on Monday night.
The Frogs got a season-high 15 points from Marlon Dumont, who made his first start of the season, and overcame the slow-down tactics of the Tigers in rolling to the win on Monday. Ryan Carroll and Derrick Davenport were the only other Frogs in double figures with 11 points each. This is the final game of a four-game homestand for the Frogs, one in which they have gone undefeated through the first three contests. In addition to their win over Princeton last night, the Frogs topped VCU and Central Oklahoma on this stand.
The Frogs have shown a balanced attack this season, as four players are averaging 15+ points per game. Senior Ryan Carroll leads the way at 19.6. Myron Anthony (15.7) and Greedy Daniels (15.4) are next, just ahead of Derrick Davenport (15.0).
Head coach Billy Tubbs has the Frogs running a high octane offense again this season. TCU is averaging 99.6 points per game, and has been over the 100-point plateau five times. Since Coach Tubbs took over the TCU program in 1994, the Frogs are 49-1 when they score 100 or more points. Now in his 27th season as a head coach, Tubbs has compiled an overall record of 566-273, including a 127-71 mark since coming to Fort Worth seven years ago. The Frogs will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis to face Butler in a 1:00 p.m.CT start. That game will be televised in Fort Worth by ESPN+ and can be seen locally on KSTR-49. The next home date for TCU will be on Thursday, December 28, when the Frogs take part in the Fort Worth Classic. The double-header at the Fort Worth Convention Center will feature the TCU women's team vs. Texas in a 5:30 p.m. battle, followed by the men's action which pits the Frogs against Texas Tech at approximately 8:00 p.m.
SCOUTING UT-ARLINGTON
The Mavericks of Texas-Arlington are off to a 2-5 start this season. They
opened with a pair of wins over Texas Wesleyan and Arkansas-Monticello, but
have dropped five straight decisions, including losses to Wichita State and
Colorado. TCU and UTA have had one common opponent this season in UT-San
Antonio. TCU posted a 91-80 win over the Roadrunners in San Antonio, while
UTSA stopped UTA by a 75-63 count.
The Mavericks have three players scoring in double digits, led by senior guard Jabari Johnson at 15.3 points per game. Sophomore forward Mack Callier chips in with 14.1 points, while Steven Barber, a 5-10 junior guard, is averaging 12.7 points a contest and tallied a team-high 25 in a 70-65 loss at UMKC last Saturday.
Eddie McCarter is in his ninth season at the helm of the Mavericks. He owns a career record of 96-130, including a 15-12 record last season. UTA finished fourth in the Southland Conference with a record of 11-7 during the 1999-2000 season. This is the 14th meeting between these two local rivals. TCU holds a 10-3 advantage, including an 8-2 mark in Fort Worth. The Frogs won the last meeting by a 94-87 score here on December 19, 1999.

DEFENSE
TCU held Princeton to just nine points in the first 14 minutes of Monday's
game and allowed just 45 points in the contest. It was the fewest points TCU
has allowed in a game since hammering SMU, 83-43 on February 3, 1990, a
stretch of 324 games.
FOR STARTERS
TCU went with a different starting lineup Monday for the first time all
season as Marlon Dumont replaced Derrick Davenport in the first unit. It was
Dumont's first Division I start. He responded with a career-high 15 points
on 6-of-7 shooting from the field in 20 minutes of action.
STREAKING FROGS
TCU has won four straight games after losing two in a row in the
Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Tournament. They have won their last 10 games at
Daniel-Meyer Coliseum since a 101-96 setback to Fresno State on January 15.
BALANCED ATTACK
The Frogs have four players averaging over 15 points per game. Senior Ryan
Carroll tallied a career-high 40 points in the win over Central Oklahoma and
leads the team in scoring at 19.6 points per game. Myron Anthony scored a
careeer-high 38 in the win over Central Oklahoma and is next at 15.7. Greedy
Daniels poured in a career-high 31 vs. Minnesota and is right behind at 15.4
points per game. Derrick Davenport is fourth on the list at 15.0. The
quartet has scored 591 of TCU's 896 points this season, 65.7 points per game
or 66.0 percent of the points scored.
BOMBS AWAY
TCU has launched 30 or more shots from beyond the arc three times this
season, including a school record 36 three-point attempts in the win over
Central Oklahoma. Through nine games they have taken 231 three-point shots,
an average of 25.7 attempts per game. They've hit 82 of those
three-pointers, 35.5 percent accuracy, or an average of 9.1 made
three-pointers per game. Greedy Daniels (66), Ryan Carroll (63) and Bingo
Merriex (47) have taken the majority of the long-range missiles.
REACHING THE CENTURY MARK
TCU has gone over the century mark five times in nine games, tallied 99
points in another contest and have scored more than 90 points seven times.
They have scored 100 or more points in four of five home games. They have
surpassed the 100-point plateau 50 times since Coach Tubbs took over the
program in 1994. The Frogs are 49-1 when scoring 100 or more points since
Tubbs came aboard. The lone loss was a 111-104 setback to Baylor on Feb. 14,
1995.
HIGH SCORING FROGS
TCU is averaging 99.6 points per game, tops in the country. They poured in
141 points in a win over Central Oklahoma, the third highest-scoring output
in school history. Last season, TCU averaged 87.9 points per game to rank
second in the nation. The Horned Frogs led the nation in scoring in both
1995 and 1998 and have led the WAC in scoring in all four years in which
they've been members of the conference. TCU's explosions against Grambling
(143) and North Texas (134) were the top two scoring contests in the country
last season.
CARROLL CLIMBS
Senior guard Ryan Carroll continues his assault on the TCU all-time scoring
list. He has 79 in the last three contests and has scored 176 points this
season, an average of 19.6 points per game. In the process, he has moved
into 13th place on the all-time list with 1,143 career points. He needs 49
points to tie Dennis Nutt (1,192) for 12th place on the all-time list. (see
chart).
LENDING A HELPING HAND
TCU guard Thomas McTyer has dished out a team-leading 56 assists in nine
games, an average of 6.2 assists per game, while committing just 12
turnovers. He has an excellent assists-to-turnovers ratio of 4.7-1. The
senior from Las Vegas handed out a career-high 10 assists while turning the
ball over just once in the win over Central Oklahoma.
ANTHONY COMES UP BIG
Myron Anthony has been a force in the middle for the Frogs this season. The
6-7, 229-pound senior from Jacksonville, Fla. is second on the team in both
points (15.7) and rebounds (7.9). He had the best game of his career in the
win over Central Oklahoma, connecting on 16-of-23 shots from the field and
6-of-8 from the line for a career high 38 points, 14 better than his
previous high-water mark. He also added 10 rebounds for his third
double-double of the season.
GREED(Y) IS GOOD
Junior guard Greedy Daniels continues to show why he was named to the WAC
Mountain Division All-Defensive Team in 1998-99 at UNLV. The junior transfer
has recorded 38 steals in nine games, an average of 4.2 thefts per contest.
He has tied the school record with seven steals in a game twice this season,
and has two other contests with six thefts. Mike Jones set the school
records for steals in a season (96) and average steals per game (2.9) in the
1997-98 campaign. Daniels also tied a school record with 16 assists in the
win over Central Oklahoma.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR DOUBLE D
TCU center Derrick Davenport has recorded a team-high four double-doubles
this season. The 6-10 senior from Indianapolis is averaging 15.0 points and
a team-leading 8.4 rebounds per game. He also has blocked 26 shots this
season and has rejected 122 shots since joining the Frogs last year.
