Horned Frogs Finish in a Tie for 60th in Sears Cup Standings

TCU and Kansas State tied for 60th place in the final 2001-02 Sears Directors Cup standings for Division I athletics, it was announced today. The Sears Directors Cup is presented annually by Sears, Roebuck and Co. and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country.
The Frogs received points in men's golf (72), men's outdoor track & field (55.5), women's golf (51.5), men's indoor track & field (41.5), women's basketball (30), women's tennis (30) and men's tennis (20) for a total of 300.5 points.
TCU was the top finisher among Conference USA institutions. South Florida was second, placing 81st overall with 223.5 points, followed by Cincinnati, which ranked 84th among Division I schools with 214.5 points. Other Conference USA schools ranked included Houston (T-100), Tulane (T-100), De Paul (T-109), East Carolina (139), UAB (143), Louisville (157), Marquette (158), Saint Louis (T-182), Memphis (192) and Charlotte (T-228).
Stanford University continued its record winning streak in the Sears Directors Cup competition at the Division I level by posting its eighth consecutive first place finish. Texas placed second while Florida was third.
Developed as a joint effort between USA TODAY and NACDA, the Sears Directors Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institutions with the best overall athletics program. The Sears Directors Cup is part of the Sears Collegiate Champions program which annually awards more than 2,200 conference and sport champion trophies and a quarter-of-a-million dollars in academic scholarships.
Of the 323 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA Division I, a total of 261 (81 percent) scored points in the Sears Directors Cup competition. Complete final rankings on all of these institutions are available on NACDA's website at www.nacda.com.
