Horned Frogs Off to Strong Start in Japan

TCU in third place following round one of Pan Pacific Super League
SHIZUOKA, Japan – Three Horned Frogs found themselves within the top-10 of the individual leaderboard and staked TCU to third place after 18 holes at the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League tournament.
Teeing off more than 6,500 miles from home, TCU finished four strokes over par (288) in round one at Grand Fields Country Club in Mishima, Shizuoka, Japan.
The Horned Frogs are one shot back of San Jose State for second place and comfortably in front of fellow Division I participants Long Beach State and Florida Gulf Coast. The 12-team field features five Japanese universities along with teams from Europe, South Korea and Taiwan.
Tournament host Nihon University holds a 16-stroke lead at 13-under 271.
In a newfound venture – TCU is competing in Asia for the first time – it was a newcomer who paced the Horned Frogs on day one of their cross-continental voyage.
Junior transfer Claire Swathwood has sole possession of fourth place after signing for a one-under 70. Swathwood, who played her first two collegiate seasons for Memphis, carded five birdies. From Carmel, Indiana, Swathwood posted her 11th career par-or-better round.
Yvette O'Brien scored even par and is tied for fifth. Gracie McGovern rounded out TCU's trio in top-10, shooting a 72 to sit T10.
Dating back to the Big 12 Championship in April, O'Brien has finished even par in three of her last four rounds as a Frog. The sophomore matched Swathwood's birdie tally. She was substituted into TCU's lineup in place of Kirstin Angosta, who was forced out due to illness.
Camille Min-Gaultier and Ella Forss each concluded their opening round four strokes over par and tied for 24th.
TCU's charge into contention began with a strong front nine. Swathwood, O'Brien and McGovern all entered the turn at one-under while the Horned Frogs collectively fired a three-under 141.
The par-35 back nine played noticeably tougher as TCU picked up seven strokes. O'Brien closed with consecutive birdies on 17 and 18.
TCU will begin the second round at approximately 6:40 p.m. CT on Wednesday. No live scoring is available and results will be finalized following the conclusion of play.
