TCU junior is tied for fourth at five strokes under par with 36 holes remaining
CARLSBAD, Calif. – One stroke is all that separates Kirstin Angosta from the top of the leaderboard with 36 holes remaining at the NCAA D1 Women's Golf Championship.
Angosta finished two strokes under par in Saturday's second round at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, trimming her tournament score to five-under 139. She is among a three-way tie for fourth place.
Megha Ganne (Stanford) Farah O'Keefe (Texas) and Kajsalotta Svarvar (Ole Miss) lead the 156-player field at six-under.
TCU has never produced a national champion on the fairways, let alone seen a player advance to the fourth and final round of the stroke play portion of the championship event. Angosta is in prime position to tick one or both boxes. The nine highest-placing individuals on non-advancing teams play a final 18 holes on Monday to crown the NCAA Individual Champion.
Angosta was among the final groups to go off in round two. Beginning on the 10th tee, the TCU junior bagged five bridies, bringing her cumulative tally to a tournament-leading 11. Angosta signed for a one-under 35 on both the front nine and back nine.
All that separated Angosta from the outright lead was an untimely double bogey on the 14th hole. She offset the miss with a trio of birdies on 11, 13 and 15. Entering the turn at one stroke under par on the day, Angosta capitalized on the par-5 second and sixth holes to shave two more strokes off her scorecard.
Angosta is the first TCU golfer to shoot even or under par in multiple postseason rounds. Saturday's performance signified her fourth straight round of par or better. Angosta placed as the outright runner up at the NCAA Waco Regional, shooting a six-under 204 to punch her ticket to La Costa. She has now scored par or better in eight of her last 14 rounds played dating back to the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate Invitational in March.
Round three will see Angosta start on the front nine and tee off at 10:42 a.m. CT on Sunday.
