TCU freshman among nations best on the track
FORT WORTH – TCU track and field freshman and indoor 200m NCAA National Champions Indya Mayberry earned a spot on the most recent watch list update for The Bowerman Award.
The Bowerman began in 2009 and is presented each year to the most outstanding male and female track and field athletes in the nation.
Receiving votes in each of the past two watchlist updates, Mayberry was voted into the consensus top 10 collegiate track and field athletes among the advisory board. Mayberry is the second TCU woman to be named to the watch list in award history, joining Whitney Gipson in 2012.
Just months into her collegiate career, Mayberry has burst onto the scene in the sprints. During the indoor season, she was named Big 12 Performer and Freshman of the Year, becoming one of two women in conference history (Sanya Richards, 2003) to win both award in the same indoor season.
Mayberry was critical in helping the Horned Frog women record their best finish ever at the indoor conference championship meet, finishing tied for fifth overall. She swept the 60m and 200m at the two-day meet to earn a pair of gold medals, becoming one of just six athletes in Big 12 history to win both sprint events at the conference championship meet.
At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mayberry clocked a world-leading time of 22.30 in the event to become the first Horned Frog to win an indoor national title since 2016 when Ronnie Baker won the men's 60m crown. Her winning time in the 200m marked the seventh fastest indoor time ever in the world and was the second best in U.S. history. She also raced in the 60m, finishing fourth overall in 7.17 to earn first team All-American honors.
The next watch list update is scheduled to occur Wednesday, April 16 (women) and Thursday, April 17 (men). Mayberry and the Horned Frogs are back on the track March 27-29 in Austin at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
